Old Bones, Modern Living with Smart Automation in Brooklyn

Every Brooklyn residence tells a distinct architectural story. Whether you are carefully restoring a multi-story Park Slope brownstone floor by floor, opening up a Cobble Hill townhouse garden apartment, or outfitting a light-filled DUMBO or Williamsburg condo with floor-to-ceiling river views, each space presents unique physical layout requirements.

Historic brownstones feature tall parlor windows, carved mantels, plaster moldings, and distinct vertical levels from the garden kitchen to top-floor bedrooms. Modern condo developments feature glass, concrete, and condo board standards. HDH Tech specializes in bridging these worlds—integrating state-of-the-art smart home automation, intelligent lighting, and motorized shading without disrupting plasterwork or diluting your home’s character.

Comprehensive Lighting Control for Townhouses & Condos

Lighting is the foundation of every home automation strategy. A cohesive system connects separate floors into a single, intuitive layout and simplifies your daily routines.

We design and install leading lighting automation systems, including Lutron HomeWorks, RadioRA 3, Ketra, Vantage, and Savant. Here is how automated lighting improves daily life in a Brooklyn home:

  • Multi-Floor Stairwell & Entryway Control: Keypads placed at key entryways and stair landings allow you to illuminate multi-flight staircases in advance. Pressing a “Goodnight” scene from the primary bedroom turns off lights on the parlor and garden levels below without requiring a trip downstairs.
  • Preservation of Original Architectural Details: Advanced wireless controls (such as Lutron RadioRA 3) fit into existing switch locations and communicate securely over reliable RF signals, eliminating the need to cut into plaster walls, ornamental moldings, or decorative ceiling medallions.
  • Parlor Floor & Entertaining Scenes: Easily balance chandeliers, wall sconces, accent art lighting, and recessed fixtures. Customized scenes transition seamlessly from bright daytime ambiance to intimate dinner party lighting with a single tap.
  • Garden Level & Outdoor Patio Integration: Extend control to garden-level living spaces, patio lights, and landscape fixtures with automated schedules tied to local sunset times.
  • Modern Open-Plan Condo Zoning: For loft-style residences and glass high-rises, we integrate Ketra tunable light fixtures and architectural keypads or voice navigation through Josh.ai to effortlessly separate kitchen, dining, and living zones.

Motorized Shades for Tall Windows & Modern Glazing

Street-facing parlor windows in Brooklyn townhouses frequently reach heights of 9 to 10 feet or more. Manual operation requires stepladders or long wands, while heavy hanging drapes can obscure restored wood casings and trim.

Our custom motorized shading solutions solve these challenges. We precision-fit compact Lutron shade housings directly inside window frames or behind architectural pocket valances, preserving visibility of original details. Translucent sheers preserve daylight while providing street-level privacy, opaque blackout fabrics ensure bedroom comfort, and solar screens tame harsh East River glare in waterfront condos while retaining skyline views.

System Repairs, Upgrades & Phased Modernization

If a previous owner left an outdated, unresponsive, or unmapped legacy control system, you do not need to perform a complete tear-out. HDH Tech regularly services, repairs, and upgrades existing Lutron, Vantage, and Savant installations.

We evaluate existing wiring, back up surviving programming, isolate hardware issues, replace aging processors, and update keypads or app controls. If you are renovating your property in stages, we can scale system architecture floor-by-floor as construction progresses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will installing lighting controls damage the historic plaster in our brownstone?
No. We specialize in retrofit technologies like Lutron wireless keypads and dimmers that mount directly into existing electrical switch boxes. They communicate via secure RF signals, eliminating the need to cut into plaster walls, decorative trim, or ceiling medallions.
Interior lighting controls and custom window treatments mounted inside interior frames do not count as exterior modifications under Landmark Preservation Commission guidelines. If any proposed change ever affects the outer façade, our team flags it during initial design reviews.
Yes. We routinely design comprehensive infrastructure plans for an entire home, then execute the installation in phases (e.g., starting with the main parlor floor and expanding to upper levels or garden apartments as renovations proceed).
In most cases, yes. Modern motorized shade profiles feature ultra-compact drive mechanisms designed to fit within shallow window pockets without obscuring historical moldings or woodwork. We measure every opening to verify fit prior to ordering.
